Omaha, NE – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa beginning Friday afternoon due to high winds and critically low humidity levels.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, the alert will remain in effect from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Counties under the watch include Douglas, Sarpy, Lancaster, Dodge, Saunders, Pottawattamie, Mills, and more across both states.
Southwest winds are forecast to range between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 45 mph. Relative humidity could fall as low as 17% in northeast Nebraska, creating conditions highly favorable for rapid fire spread.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Local emergency services are advising residents to secure outdoor equipment and avoid activities that could create sparks, such as grilling or using power tools near dry vegetation.
Fire Weather Watches are precursors to potential Red Flag Warnings, meaning conditions could worsen. Historically, this region experiences increased fire risk during dry spring days, particularly when winds surge across open plains.
Officials urge residents to monitor updates and review fire safety plans. Stay informed through local alerts and the National Weather Service for any changes to Friday’s fire weather outlook.
