Lincoln, NE – An Air Quality Alert has been issued for Eastern and Central Nebraska, warning of moderate to unhealthy air quality conditions due to smoke. The alert will remain in effect from 6:00 a.m. on April 12 until 12:00 p.m. on April 13.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) have issued the warning for several counties, including Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, Gage, Adams, and many others. The primary concern is elevated levels of PM 2.5 particulates, which can affect air quality, particularly due to smoke from prescribed burning in the Central Plains.
According to NDEE, the air quality index (AQI) will likely range from moderate (yellow) to unhealthy for sensitive groups (orange). Sensitive individuals—such as those with heart or lung conditions, children, and older adults—are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and reduce exposure to outdoor air. Those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution should limit outdoor activity or reduce intensity when necessary.
This air quality alert serves as a precaution to inform residents of the potential health risks posed by the smoke, urging them to take necessary steps to protect their well-being during this period. For more information, visit the NDEE’s website.
