Chicago, IL – Illinois has been cut off from the federal Medicaid portal, blocking access to critical healthcare funds. The move follows an executive order pausing federal funding, including Medicaid, which serves low-income residents.

According to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office, Illinois lost Medicaid access Tuesday morning. The health program, jointly funded by state and federal governments, provides coverage to nearly four million Illinois residents.

State officials report issues accessing federal disbursement systems, affecting Medicaid and other assistance programs.

Pritzker called the funding halt unconstitutional, vowing to challenge the decision.

Democrats and advocacy groups argue the funding freeze is illegal since Congress already approved the budget. Federal officials claim the review ensures spending aligns with new executive orders.

Sen. Dick Durbin and Sen. Tammy Duckworth condemned the freeze, warning it jeopardizes hospitals, law enforcement, and social services. Court battles are expected as Illinois and other states push back.
