This Saturday, April 12, 2025, skywatchers across the country will be treated to the first Full Moon of spring, known as the Pink Moon. The moon will reach its peak at 8:23 p.m. EDT, though despite the name, it won’t appear pink. The moon is named after the pink phlox flowers that bloom in early spring, signaling the arrival of the season.
This Pink Moon will also be a MicroMoon, meaning it will be at the farthest point from Earth in its orbit, causing it to appear slightly smaller than a typical Full Moon. The moon will rise in the eastern sky just after sunset, casting an orange glow as it emerges on the horizon. For the best view, find an unobstructed spot facing east—elevated areas or open fields offer ideal viewing.
In some northern U.S. states, there is also a chance to see the aurora borealis, or northern lights, coinciding with the moonrise on Thursday, April 10. Additionally, the Pink Moon holds significance for the Christian calendar, as it is the Paschal Moon, determining the date of Easter Sunday, which falls on April 20 this year.
Don’t miss out on this unique celestial event tomorrow evening.
