Nashville, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee residents could face dangerous driving conditions and rising waters through Wednesday evening as a Flood Watch remains in effect for much of the region. Heavy downpours early this morning have saturated the ground, increasing the risk of localized flash flooding in cities including Nashville, Cookeville, Franklin, Columbia, and Tullahoma.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, the watch covers more than 35 counties, including Robertson, Sumner, Davidson, Rutherford, and Williamson. While widespread flooding is not expected, storms this afternoon could dump enough rain to overwhelm storm drains, flood low-lying roads, and swell creeks and streams.

Travelers along I-40, I-24, and I-65 should watch for water collecting on highways, especially near underpasses and rural stretches prone to runoff. Drivers are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and to find alternate routes if water is present.

Localized flooding could develop quickly in neighborhoods already hit by this morning’s storms, with poor-drainage urban areas and rural hollows most at risk. Residents should keep phones charged, monitor alerts, and move valuables from basements.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight, with more warnings possible if afternoon storms intensify.
