Nevada starts the morning calm, but conditions will turn quickly as strong winds build across the Reno area. By evening, southwest winds roar through valleys and passes, whipping loose objects and making travel increasingly difficult.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 4 p.m. Wednesday for western Nevada and nearby eastern California. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. Wind-prone areas, including Washoe Valley and Pyramid Lake, could see gusts as high as 60 mph.

Drivers on I-80, U.S. 395, and open stretches of highway should prepare for sudden crosswinds, especially overnight into Wednesday morning. High-profile vehicles face the greatest risk. Blowing debris and downed tree limbs may briefly block roads or create localized power outages.

Temperatures remain mild for December, starting near 38 degrees and climbing into the mid-to-upper 50s today and Wednesday. While no snow is expected in Reno, light rain remains possible at times, which could add slick pavement to already challenging driving conditions.

Winds peak early Wednesday, then gradually ease by late afternoon. By Thursday, calmer conditions return with mostly sunny skies and highs near 62 degrees, offering a short break from unsettled weather.

Looking ahead to the extended five-day outlook, rain chances return Friday and into the weekend. Snow levels fluctuate between 7,200 and 8,600 feet, keeping valley locations rain-only for now. Still, colder nights dipping into the 30s raise the possibility of slick roads or black ice during early morning hours, especially after rain.

Secure loose outdoor items today, plan extra travel time, and stay weather-aware as December weather remains active.
