Nashville, Tennessee — A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Middle Tennessee as a potentially high-impact winter storm is expected to bring snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures beginning Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing late Friday and remain there into early next week. The coldest conditions are expected Monday and Tuesday mornings, when widespread single-digit temperatures are possible across the Nashville area.

Snow and ice chances will increase Friday night through Sunday. Forecast guidance shows the highest probability for at least 6 inches of snow occurring along and north of Interstate 40, including the Nashville metro area. South of I-40, there is growing concern for freezing rain or sleet, with a 30 to 60 percent chance of at least a quarter inch of ice. Even where snow totals are lower, ice could lead to significant travel and utility impacts.

Forecasters caution that precipitation type and exact timing remain uncertain, but impacts could be substantial regardless. Freezing rain could reduce snowfall amounts while increasing the risk of power outages and downed trees.

Major routes including Interstate 40, Interstate 24, and Interstate 65 could become hazardous or impassable at times, especially from Saturday into Sunday when the bulk of accumulation is expected. Prolonged subfreezing temperatures may keep roads icy well after precipitation ends.

The National Weather Service urges residents to prepare now by limiting weekend travel plans, protecting pipes, ensuring pets are indoors, and stocking essential supplies. Drivers should anticipate extended delays and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm periods.

For commuters, students, and weekend travelers, the most dangerous conditions are expected from late Friday night through Sunday, with lingering cold and icy conditions potentially impacting travel into early next week across the Nashville area.
