Naperville, Ill. — The Naperville Police Department announced in a press release on June 23 that they would be joining the state-wide effort to enforce drunk driving over the next two weekends. The Independence Day traffic campaign ends July 7.

The Illinois State Police and more than 200 other local departments are participating in the campaign, which focuses on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The campaign includes several safety tips for celebrating the holiday.

The department asked residents to designate a sober driver when out, and give the driver the keys before leaving. Those impaired by alcohol, cannabis or other drugs should not drive but utilize public transportation, taxi or rideshare services.

Any driver can report impaired driving to law enforcement and should make sure all passengers are buckled when on the road.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Naperville Police Sergeant Derek Zook in the press release. “It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances. Our officers will be working diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone is buckled up.”
