Aurora, Illinois – Smoke could reduce visibility within minutes for drivers near Big Woods Forest Preserve today as a planned burn operation ramps up through the afternoon hours.
According to the Aurora Fire Department and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, a prescribed burn is underway east of Eola Road between Butterfield Road and Bilter Road, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until about 5 p.m. Tuesday. Winds out of the south-southwest will push smoke north and northeast at times, potentially impacting nearby roadways and neighborhoods.
Areas near Butterfield Road, Eola Road, and the I-88 corridor may see brief drops in visibility, especially during peak burn periods late morning into early afternoon. Smoke may also drift into residential zones and commercial areas, including portions of Aurora and Naperville.
Officials stress this is a controlled operation designed to manage woodland, wetland, and prairie areas while reducing the risk of future wildfires. Crews will monitor conditions throughout the day.
Drivers are urged to slow down if smoke crosses roadways and use headlights in low visibility. Residents with respiratory sensitivities should limit time outdoors if smoke becomes noticeable.
The burn is expected to wrap up by late afternoon, though lingering smoke could persist into the early evening. Additional prescribed burns may be scheduled if conditions remain favorable this week.
