Myrtle Beach, SC – Residents across South Carolina’s Pee Dee and Grand Strand regions are facing icy conditions Friday morning as freezing rain and sleet continue through early afternoon.
An active weather system was observed at 11:32 a.m., according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Radar showed sleet and freezing rain extending from Georgetown to Greeleyville, with movement northeast at 40 mph. Areas impacted include Myrtle Beach, Conway, Georgetown, and Pawleys Island, as well as Lake City, Kingstree, and Murrells Inlet.
Travel conditions are expected to worsen as temperatures hover near freezing. Icy bridges and overpasses pose significant hazards for drivers. Residents are urged to reduce speeds and allow extra travel time.
The weather service advised that conditions could deteriorate rapidly as the storm system continues to impact the region. Snow or ice-covered roads are possible, and preparedness is critical.
“Stay off the roads if you can,” officials advised. “If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is equipped for icy conditions.”
The system is expected to continue through early afternoon, impacting both inland and coastal areas. Areas northward, including Surfside Beach and Socastee, may also experience icy precipitation.
