Mount Shasta, CA – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring up to 2 feet of snow and gusty winds to the Mount Shasta highlands and surrounding areas beginning Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday through 5 p.m. Tuesday for high-elevation regions of Siskiyou County, including Mount Shasta, Etna, McCloud, and Dunsmuir. Snow totals could range between 12 to 24 inches, with wind gusts reaching 45 mph, especially above 4,500 feet.
Travel across the region may become very difficult to impossible, particularly along Etna Summit, Scott Mountain Summit, and roads in the Klamath, Salmon, and Trinity mountains. Monday morning and evening commutes are expected to be hazardous due to heavy snowfall and limited visibility. Gusty winds may also down tree branches, leading to potential power disruptions.
Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for rapidly changing weather and road conditions. Emergency kits, tire chains, and extra food and water are recommended for anyone traveling in the area.
Drivers should monitor updates from Caltrans and local emergency management for road closures and safety advisories throughout the storm’s duration.
