Las Vegas, Nevada – Drivers heading into the higher elevations northwest of Las Vegas could encounter dangerous winter conditions tonight as snow and gusty winds blanket the Spring Mountains, including the Mount Charleston area.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Sunday evening through early Monday morning for elevations above 7,000 feet in the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon area. Snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected near Mount Charleston, with winds gusting up to 35 mph creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The combination of accumulating snow and gusty winds is expected to make travel very difficult, especially along Kyle Canyon Road, Lee Canyon Road, and other mountain routes. Conditions are likely to deteriorate quickly after sunset, with the most hazardous travel occurring overnight.

Lower elevations of the Las Vegas Valley are not expected to see snow, but travelers heading into the mountains should be prepared for winter driving conditions, including slick roads and limited visibility. Road crews may have limited ability to keep up with snowfall during the overnight hours.

Drivers are urged to slow down, carry chains or traction devices if traveling into the mountains, and check Nevada 511 for the latest road conditions before departing. Snow is expected to taper before sunrise Monday, though icy patches could linger into the early morning hours as temperatures remain cold.
