Billings, MT – Snow-covered highways and reduced visibility are already slowing drivers across southern Montana and northern Wyoming early Tuesday, with the worst conditions hitting before the morning commute ends.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. MDT Tuesday, bringing 2 to 5 inches of snow across Southern Rosebud, Southern Big Horn, and Bighorn Canyon, with up to 6 inches near the Beartooth Foothills. Bands of snow are actively reducing visibility and creating slick, slushy road conditions.
Travel impacts are most significant along I-90 from Crow Agency to Sheridan, where visibility may briefly drop below a half mile in heavier bursts. US-212 over Lame Deer Divide and through the Red Lodge area is also snow-covered, with higher elevations seeing the most accumulation and hazardous driving.
Communities including Sheridan, Lame Deer, Ashland, and Red Lodge are dealing with snow-packed secondary roads and slower travel speeds. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and check Montana and Wyoming 511 systems before heading out.
Conditions should gradually improve after 9 a.m. as snowfall tapers, but slick spots may linger on bridges and shaded roads into late morning. Additional advisories could be issued if new snow bands develop.
