Bozeman, Mont. – Drivers heading through Montana’s mountain passes this weekend should brace for snow, slick roads, and potential power outages starting Saturday evening. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 6 p.m. Saturday and continues through noon Sunday, covering key routes in central, north-central, and southwest Montana.

According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, 2 to 6 inches of heavy, wet snow is expected in areas above 5,000 feet, including Bozeman Pass, Homestake Pass, Chief Joseph Pass, and Kings Hill Pass. Snowfall could weigh down tree limbs and power lines, increasing the risk of outages in places like Big Sky, West Yellowstone, and Wisdom.

Slippery road conditions are likely overnight and into early Sunday. MDT urges drivers to slow down and check 511 for live road updates. Recreational travelers and campers in the Elkhorn, Ruby, and Little Belt Mountains should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and limited visibility.

This unusually late June snow event mirrors past cold snaps in high terrain and serves as a reminder that Montana’s weather can turn on a dime — even in summer.

The advisory remains in effect until noon Sunday. Further alerts could follow if conditions worsen.
