Great Falls, MT – Montana residents are bracing for a winter storm set to bring snow and strong winds to various regions starting Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Weather Advisory will take effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday across mountain areas, including the Highwood, Little Belt, Judith, and Snowy ranges, as well as the Big Belt and Castle Mountains. Expected snowfall totals range between 2 and 4 inches, with wind gusts up to 45 mph creating dangerous travel conditions.
Lower elevations, including portions of north-central Montana, will see lighter snow accumulations of up to 1 inch. However, strong winds reaching 40 mph are anticipated, potentially causing blowing and drifting snow. Areas like the Rocky Mountain Front may experience gusts as high as 75 mph along the eastern slopes.
Drivers are urged to use caution as visibility may be significantly reduced, and drifting snow could block roadways. Those traveling should monitor road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the Montana Department of Transportation’s website.
The advisory will also affect regions such as the Bears Paw Mountains, where 2 to 4 inches of snow is forecast, with winds gusting up to 45 mph. The advisory there will remain in effect from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.
