Billings, Mont. – Backcountry travel in Montana’s Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains could turn dangerous through Tuesday as a late-season snowstorm dumps up to 16 inches of snow and triggers hazardous wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday for elevations above 7,000 feet. Northeast-facing slopes are expected to see the most accumulation, while winds may gust up to 35 mph.

Snow removal crews are likely to face delays along the Beartooth Highway, where drifting and deep snow could disrupt spring maintenance. Although less accumulation is forecast on southwest slopes, Cooke City could still experience localized snow and reduced visibility.

Outdoor recreationists should avoid high elevations during this period, especially on exposed terrain. Avalanche risks may rise, and cold conditions could catch hikers and backcountry skiers off-guard.

Travelers and snowmobilers are urged to check local conditions before heading out and carry emergency gear, including extra layers and navigation tools.

This Winter Storm Warning remains active until noon Tuesday, with updates expected if snowfall rates or wind intensify.
