Great Falls, MT – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across Montana, bringing heavy snow and dangerous winds to multiple regions, including Northwest Beaverhead County, East Glacier Park, and the Southern Rocky Mountain Front. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect through Saturday evening, followed by a Winter Storm Watch lasting until Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service, affected areas could see additional snowfall ranging from 2 to 10 inches, depending on elevation, with gusts reaching 70 mph in some locations. These conditions could make travel treacherous, especially in mountain passes like Big Hole Pass, Chief Joseph Pass, Rogers Pass, and Marias Pass, where tire chains may be required.
Blowing snow and whiteout conditions are expected, significantly reducing visibility. The extreme winds may also damage trees and power lines, increasing the risk of power outages. Travelers are urged to check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the Montana Department of Transportation website before heading out.
Residents should prepare for hazardous conditions by stocking emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water. Those with young livestock should take precautions against extreme cold. The public is advised to monitor weather updatesfor the latest developments.
