Glasgow, Mont. – Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should brace for rough waters Thursday, as strong northwest winds threaten to create hazardous conditions throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. MDT Thursday. Winds are expected to reach 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, generating choppy waves that could overturn small craft.

Communities around the lake, including Glasgow, Fort Peck, Malta, and Jordan, should avoid unnecessary lake travel during peak gust hours. The advisory follows the expiration of Wednesday’s Heat Advisory and marks a shift toward wind-driven weather impacts in the region.

Boaters are urged to wear life jackets, secure loose equipment, and check vessel stability before heading out. Even experienced operators may find navigation difficult under Thursday’s conditions.

This advisory is focused on Fort Peck Lake, but similar wind conditions may be felt in open areas of Valley, Phillips, Garfield, McCone, and Petroleum counties.

Lake wind hazards are expected to ease Thursday night, though updates may follow if conditions worsen.
