Billings, MT – A powerful late-season winter storm is blanketing south-central Montana with heavy snow and gusty winds, creating dangerous travel conditions across mountain corridors and nearby valleys through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, winter storm warnings remain in effect for numerous counties and ranges, including the Beartooth, Absaroka, and Crazy Mountains, until noon Friday. Snow accumulations could reach 1 to 2 feet in higher elevations, with winds gusting as high as 50 mph, reducing visibility and increasing avalanche danger in recreational areas.
Cities like Billings, Red Lodge, and Cooke City are already seeing several inches of wet snow, while areas such as the Madison River Valley and Gallatin Mountains may experience additional accumulations through midnight Thursday. Lower elevations can expect between 2 and 5 inches, mainly on grassy surfaces, though roads including Interstate 90 and U.S. 212 will be slick and hazardous, especially on bridges and passes.
Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible. If travel is necessary, carry emergency supplies including food, water, and a flashlight. For updated road conditions, call 511 or visit the Montana Department of Transportation website.
Winds and snowfall are expected to ease Friday afternoon, with clearing conditions by the weekend.
