Billings, Montana – Strong, gusty winds could create hazardous conditions across south-central Montana overnight and into Wednesday morning, especially in foothill communities near the mountains. The winds may arrive suddenly and shift direction quickly, posing risks for travel and unsecured property.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, periods of strong west to southwest winds are expected late tonight through Tuesday morning, with another round developing Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph are possible across foothill areas highlighted near the mountains, with the strongest winds occurring closest to the terrain. Some locations near the immediate mountain front could see gusts approaching 50 mph.
Communities east and south of Billings, including areas near Dayton, Sheridan, and along foothill corridors, are most likely to experience the strongest impacts. Winds may be sporadic, rapidly changing in intensity and direction, which can make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways.
Loose outdoor items could become airborne, and isolated power interruptions are possible if strong gusts impact trees or power lines. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially overnight and during the early morning commute, and remain alert for sudden crosswinds.
The strongest wind threat is expected to diminish by Wednesday morning, though breezy conditions may linger through the day. Additional updates or advisories could be issued if wind speeds increase or expand farther east.
