Billings, Montana – Drivers across south-central Montana could face hazardous travel conditions as strong crosswinds develop Saturday afternoon and persist into Sunday, particularly along Interstate 90 and nearby foothill communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, strong west to southwest winds are expected to intensify this afternoon and continue into Sunday, creating dangerous conditions for high-profile vehicles. Peak wind gusts between 40 and 55 mph are likely, with the strongest winds focused near Livingston, Big Timber, Nye, and Columbus. The western foothills and gaps are especially vulnerable to sudden gusts.
The most dangerous travel window stretches from midafternoon Saturday through early Sunday afternoon in the highest-risk areas. Additional strong winds are expected Sunday morning through late afternoon across a broader portion of the region. Along I-90 near Livingston, gusts strong enough to make steering difficult could develop quickly, increasing the risk of blowovers for semis, campers, and vehicles towing trailers.
Motorists are advised to delay travel if possible, use alternate routes, and keep both hands on the wheel when driving through wind-prone corridors. Securing loose outdoor items is also recommended to prevent damage.
Winds are expected to gradually ease Sunday evening, but breezy conditions may linger. Travelers should monitor updated statements from the National Weather Service in case additional wind advisories are issued.
