Billings, MT – Strong winds and large hail could slam parts of eastern Montana starting Monday afternoon, as a round of scattered severe thunderstorms tracks across the state through 1 a.m. Tuesday. Residents from Billings to Glendive should stay alert for damaging wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the strongest storms are expected between 2 p.m. and midnight, with the potential to extend into the early morning hours. A Level 2 (Slight Risk) severe weather threat is in place for much of eastern Montana, including Miles City, Roundup, Broadus, and Wolf Point.
Winds may peak near 65 mph in some storm cells, which could lead to tree damage, isolated power outages, and dangerous driving conditions—especially on I-94 and U.S. Highway 87. Heavy downpours may also cause brief street flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents are urged to postpone outdoor plans, secure loose items, and ensure mobile devices are charged in case of power loss. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, and seek shelter immediately if a warning is issued.
Storms will gradually weaken by early Tuesday morning, but additional updates are expected as new cells develop.
