Great Falls, Montana – Travel across Montana’s mountain passes will remain hazardous through late Tuesday afternoon as snow and 50 mph wind gusts create blowing and drifting conditions along the Continental Divide.

According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for the Ruby Mountains, Southern Beaverhead Mountains, Gallatin and Madison County Mountains, and the Centennial Mountains. Snow totals will range from 2 to 6 inches, with up to 10 inches above 7,000 feet near the Divide. Ridge-top winds may gust as high as 50 mph.

Additional advisories cover the East Glacier Park region, Southern Rocky Mountain Front, Upper Blackfoot and MacDonald Pass, Elkhorn and Boulder Mountains, and Northwest Beaverhead County. Locations including Marias Pass, Rogers Pass, Homestake Pass, Big Hole Pass and Chief Joseph Pass could see 2 to 5 inches of snow with significant blowing snow.

Tire chains may be required for some vehicles, especially near West Yellowstone, Big Sky and Monida Pass. Gusty winds will reduce visibility and create sudden drifts across exposed highways.

Drivers should delay non-essential travel and check Montana 511 or the MDT Road Report for closures. Hazardous mountain conditions will persist through Tuesday afternoon before gradually easing.
