Billings, Montana – Scattered severe thunderstorms will threaten much of Montana this afternoon and evening, bringing the risk of large hail, damaging winds up to 65 mph, and heavy rainfall through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the strongest storms are expected between 3 p.m. and midnight across central and eastern Montana, including Billings, Miles City, Lewistown, and Glendive. A Level 2 threat is in place, meaning scattered severe storms are possible, and outdoor plans should be adjusted as conditions can quickly worsen.
Cities such as Billings, Hardin, Roundup, Forsyth, and Glendive could see hail up to 2 inches in diameter, intense lightning, and brief power outages. Localized flooding is possible where heavy rain falls in a short period. High winds may topple tree limbs or power lines, especially in open areas along I-94 and Highway 87.
Travelers are urged to monitor weather alerts and seek shelter indoors if thunder roars nearby. Secure outdoor furniture, charge electronic devices, and avoid driving through flooded roads. Tonight’s storms may be similar to last month’s severe event, so residents should take all warnings seriously.
The severe weather threat remains until midnight, and additional advisories may be issued as storms progress eastward. Stay tuned to the latest updates from the NWS and local authorities.
