Great Falls, MT – Residents in Montana are urged to prepare for hazardous travel conditions as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Monday. Snowfall, combined with gusty winds, is expected to create slippery roads and reduced visibility, impacting commutes and travel statewide.

According to the National Weather Service, Cascade, Fergus, and Judith Basin counties could see total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches starting Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. Meanwhile, higher elevations, including the Elkhorn and Boulder mountains, are forecast to receive up to 15 inches of snow. Winds could reach speeds of 40 mph in some areas, further complicating road safety.

Drivers are advised to use extreme caution and check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the Montana Department of Transportation’s road report website. Officials recommend keeping emergency supplies, including flashlights and water, in vehicles during travel.

The weather will remain unsettled through the week, with additional snow chances Wednesday and into New Year’s Day. Daytime temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, ranging from highs near 30°F on Tuesday to 29°F on New Year’s Day. Overnight lows will dip into the teens and single digits, adding to the potential for icy roads.

Residents planning holiday travel should monitor local weather updates closely and delay trips if possible. With snow accumulation ongoing and temperatures plummeting, preparedness is key to ensuring safety on Montana’s winter roads.
