Seattle, WA – Residents of Washington should prepare for a winter storm expected to bring significant snowfall to the Cascades, impacting travel and holiday plans.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for elevations above 3,000 feet in the West Slopes North Central Cascades, including Snoqualmie Pass and Stevens Pass. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts snowfall between 6 and 11 inches beginning Sunday morning and continuing through 10 a.m. Monday.
According to the NWS, snow will make roads, especially bridges and overpasses, slick and hazardous. Travelers heading through major routes such as Interstate 90 should plan for delays and carry chains. Officials urge motorists to slow down and exercise caution on mountain passes, where visibility and road conditions will rapidly deteriorate.
Sunday’s forecast also brings widespread rain to the Seattle metro area, with highs reaching 46 degrees and wind gusts up to 13 mph. Rain will persist overnight, with the heaviest downpours easing into lighter showers by Monday morning.
Looking ahead, Monday will see scattered rain showers in lower elevations and more mountain snow, with highs near 47 degrees. New Year’s Eve is shaping up to bring a brief break in precipitation during the day, but rain is likely to return by evening and continue into New Year’s Day.
Residents planning outdoor celebrations should prepare for wet conditions and dress accordingly. For mountain travelers, packing emergency supplies and checking conditions before departing is strongly recommended.
