Moline, Illinois – Christmas Day across the Quad Cities is ending on a gray and damp note, with drivers urged to use caution tonight as drizzle becomes more widespread and fog threatens to thicken after sunset.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, periods of drizzle are expected to increase late today into this evening, with the potential for fog to rapidly reduce visibility once daylight fades. Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly, especially on rural roads and along river valleys where fog often forms fastest.
Temperatures are holding well above normal for late December, remaining nearly steady through the day and night. Highs are expected to range from the upper 30s to mid 40s north of Interstate 80, with mid to upper 40s farther south. The mild air, combined with persistent low clouds and drizzle, creates a favorable setup for dense fog development tonight.
Forecasters note that visibility could drop significantly at times, making holiday travel more challenging, particularly after sunset. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, use low-beam headlights in fog, and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
Despite the gloomy conditions, no snow is expected, continuing the trend of mostly snow-free Christmas Days across the Quad Cities in recent years. Fog and drizzle may linger into the overnight hours, and travelers should continue to monitor updates if heading out later tonight or early Friday.
