Moab, Utah – Visitors in Arches National Park are being warned of dangerous flash flooding Thursday after heavy rain triggered sudden rises in creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. Thunderstorms dropped between a half-inch and nearly an inch of rain in less than an hour, with more downpours expected.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect for south-central Grand County until 2:45 p.m. MDT. Radar showed the heaviest rainfall moving through Salt Wash and surrounding canyons, with runoff feeding into the Colorado River. Officials say flash flooding is already ongoing or will begin shortly.

Small creeks, drainage systems, and roads inside Arches are considered especially vulnerable. Floodwaters may rise rapidly even in areas where rain is not falling directly. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Hikers should stay out of canyons, avoid streambeds, and move to higher ground if water levels rise.

Park officials caution visitors to watch for rocks, debris, and fast-moving water along trails and roadways. Travel delays and closures are possible until the warning expires. Additional advisories may be issued if heavy rain persists.
