Springfield, MO – A major winter storm is hitting Missouri, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous cold through Wednesday morning. Travel is expected to be hazardous, with snow accumulations of up to 14 inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts up to 30 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday, with a Cold Weather Advisory lasting through Thursday. Temperatures will drop as low as -10°F with wind chills reaching -20°F, creating a risk of frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.
Drivers should avoid travel if possible, especially along Interstate 49 and Interstate 44, where conditions will be particularly dangerous. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit, including blankets, food, and a flashlight.
The storm will ease by late Wednesday, but bitter cold will persist. Highs will remain in the teens through Thursday before a warming trend this weekend. Sunshine returns by Saturday, with highs reaching the mid-40s.
