Low clouds and lingering fog hung over parts of Springfield late this morning, especially near valleys and low-lying roads south of downtown. Visibility improved steadily after sunrise, but damp air and calm winds kept pockets of haze lingering along stretches of I-44 and Highway 65 before midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Dense Fog Advisory remained in effect through late morning as visibility briefly dropped below one-quarter mile in parts of the Ozarks. Conditions continue improving this afternoon as sunshine breaks through and temperatures climb toward 80 degrees.

Drivers heading toward Branson, Republic, and Nixa should still watch for isolated reduced visibility in shaded valleys and near rivers early this afternoon. Roads remain mostly dry now, and calmer weather settles in through tonight with clearer skies and lighter winds across southern Missouri.

The quiet pattern holds into Memorial Day with bright sunshine and highs reaching the lower 80s. Humidity levels stay manageable through Monday, creating favorable conditions for lakes, parks, and outdoor gatherings across the region.

Changes arrive Tuesday as a more active storm pattern begins spreading into the Ozarks. Showers and thunderstorms become increasingly likely during the afternoon and evening hours. Some storms could bring brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and isolated hail, especially west of Springfield toward the Kansas border.

Rain chances continue into Wednesday and Thursday while temperatures remain unusually warm for late May. Afternoon highs push into the lower 80s, adding a more summer-like feel across southwest Missouri. Tornado potential currently appears limited, but residents should continue monitoring updates as instability increases later this week.

Long-range outlooks still favor warmer-than-normal temperatures heading into early June across much of the central Plains and Ozarks.
