Kansas City, Missouri – Thunderstorms and heavy rain could bring hazardous travel conditions to Kansas City and much of northwest Missouri by Tuesday evening, with wind gusts nearing 30 mph and rainfall totals topping one inch in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, a hazardous weather outlook remains in effect for northwestern, north-central, and west-central Missouri—including Buchanan, Clay, Jackson, and Cass counties—as well as extreme eastern Kansas. The primary threat begins late Monday with increasing storm chances through Tuesday night.
By Tuesday, a 90% chance of thunderstorms may lead to locally heavy rainfall, especially in areas like St. Joseph, Liberty, and Lee’s Summit. Winds could reach up to 28 mph, and isolated storms may produce brief flooding on low-lying roads. Tuesday night storms are expected to persist, tapering off after midnight.
Residents should prepare for reduced visibility due to patchy smoke today and tonight, and monitor forecasts for potential severe weather Monday and Tuesday. Limit outdoor activity during smoky periods and secure loose items before the wind picks up.
Storms may linger through early Wednesday, but conditions are expected to dry out midweek. Another round of rain is possible by Friday.
