Springfield, Mo. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to move across Missouri this afternoon and evening, bringing the risk of hail, damaging winds and frequent lightning. The National Weather Service warns the highest chances for strong storms will line up near and on either side of Highway 65, including Springfield, Branson and Ozark.
According to the National Weather Service office in Springfield, a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms remains in place. Forecasters caution that a few stronger storms could quickly turn severe, producing hail up to quarters in size and wind gusts strong enough to down trees or power lines.
Travelers on Interstate 44 and Highway 65 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, including heavy downpours and reduced visibility. Outdoor events in Springfield and surrounding Greene County could see lightning delays or cancellations this evening.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices in case of power outages, and remain inside when thunder is heard. Anyone with evening plans is advised to stay weather-aware and monitor local updates.
Storm chances taper off later tonight, but forecasters note additional rounds of unsettled weather may follow later this week.
