Springfield, MO – A brief window for isolated tornadoes could develop after 8 p.m. Thursday across central Missouri as scattered thunderstorms strengthen into the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) is in place for areas including Jefferson City, Osage Beach, Rolla, and surrounding communities. Storms are expected to form late Thursday evening and continue into the overnight period, with the greatest concern between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.
While the overall severe threat remains limited, any stronger storm could produce damaging wind gusts and large hail, along with a low but notable chance of a brief, isolated tornado. The risk zone stretches along key travel routes including U.S. 63 and Interstate 44, where nighttime storms could reduce visibility and create sudden hazards.
Residents should keep phones charged and enable weather alerts before going to bed Thursday night, as warnings may be issued while many are asleep. Identify a safe shelter location in advance, especially in mobile homes or structures without basements.
Storm activity should weaken toward early Friday morning, but additional updates are expected if the severe threat increases.
