Springfield, Mo. – Drivers across southern Missouri faced patchy but dangerous visibility early Thursday as dense fog blanketed highways and rural roads from Springfield to West Plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, visibility dropped to a half mile or less in several areas after midnight, prompting a dense fog advisory. The agency warned that the fog is expected to linger through sunrise before gradually lifting.
Low visibility has made travel hazardous, particularly along U.S. Route 60, I-44, and state highways cutting through low-lying valleys. Officials caution that sudden changes in visibility may occur without warning, increasing the risk of accidents.
Motorists are urged to use low beam headlights and reduce speed, especially on rural roads and near open fields where fog tends to thicken. Missouri Department of Transportation crews remain on alert but are not currently reporting closures.
This fog event comes as temperatures hover in the mid-60s with light wind—conditions ideal for fog formation. While no major delays have been reported, travelers should plan for longer commute times this morning.
Visibility is expected to improve steadily after 7 a.m., but more fog advisories could be issued later this week if humidity and calm winds persist.
