Kansas City, MO – A major traffic disruption is underway in Platte County as the northbound lanes of Interstate 29 are currently shut down at Cookingham Drive.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the closure was reported early Thursday morning just before 7:40 a.m., prompting officials to advise drivers to seek alternate routes. A traffic camera image shared by MoDOT shows vehicles backing up along the highway as emergency and maintenance personnel work to address the closure.

No official cause for the closure has been released yet. MoDOT did not immediately confirm if the incident was related to an accident, road damage, or another infrastructure concern.

This closure is expected to significantly impact morning commute times, particularly for those heading toward Kansas City International Airport or downtown Kansas City. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use detours via U.S. Highway 169 or Interstate 435.

MoDOT officials stated updates will be shared via social media and their traveler information map at traveler.modot.org. Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions before departing.

More information will be provided as updates become available.
