Kansas City, Missouri – High winds and a growing risk of severe thunderstorms are set to hit northwest Missouri today, with conditions peaking this evening into early Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, southerly wind gusts are expected to reach near 45 mph across the region by midday Monday, especially around St. Joseph, Maryville, and Kansas City. A cold front pushing through later tonight could trigger strong to severe storms, with threats including very large hail, damaging winds, and a few brief tornadoes.
Cities like Rockport, Leavenworth, and Lee’s Summit will see maximum gusts near 40 to 45 mph between noon and 5 p.m. Commuters should anticipate hazardous driving conditions, especially on elevated highways and bridges. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and remain weather-aware through the evening.
While the threat of isolated storms exists this afternoon, forecasters warn the greatest confidence for widespread strong storms comes overnight as the cold front arrives. Areas north of the Missouri River, particularly around Atchison, Cameron, and Chillicothe, are under an enhanced risk zone (level 3 of 5).
Warnings and watches could expand as storms develop, with additional rainfall and possible flooding expected south of the Missouri River by midweek.
