Missouri air cuts sharp across Kansas City this morning as temperatures sit near 22 degrees under clear skies. A northwest breeze pushes wind chills close to 10 degrees, biting exposed skin and keeping sidewalks stiff with frost.

Drivers along I-70 and U.S. 71 find dry pavement, but shaded overpasses remain slick after a low near 24 degrees. Even minor meltwater can refreeze quickly in this February cold.

Wind chills hover near 10 degrees.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill reports highs climbing to around 41 degrees today with sunshine and northwest winds up to 20 mph. While the cold dominates the morning, officials also warn of elevated to critical fire weather conditions this afternoon across eastern Kansas into central Missouri due to dry air and gusty winds.

Avoid outdoor burning today.

Clouds increase late tonight with a 30 percent chance of light snow mainly between evening and early morning. Little to no accumulation is expected, but brief flakes could create slick patches if temperatures dip below freezing.

Saturday turns mostly sunny with highs near 41 degrees. Saturday night falls to the mid-20s. Sunday stays sunny and cooler, topping out near 38 degrees before dropping into the teens Sunday night.

Monday remains bright but cold near 36. Then a dramatic warmup begins. Tuesday surges toward the upper 50s, and Wednesday reaches the low 60s. Longer-range trends point to above-normal temperatures building late next week, delivering early spring warmth across Missouri and Kansas.

Watch for flash freezing after sunset if snowflakes briefly dampen roads.
