Kansas City, MO – Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma are on high alert for severe weather Wednesday as meteorologists warn of the potential for tornadoes, damaging winds, and golf ball-sized hail. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Enhanced Risk level for these central states, indicating a high probability of impactful weather, especially along major routes like I-35 in Kansas and Missouri.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, severe thunderstorms are expected to develop mid-morning across eastern Nebraska and Kansas, tracking southward through Missouri and Oklahoma. The storms may intensify, bringing damaging wind gusts, hail reaching the size of golf balls, and isolated tornadoes, some of which could be strong. Areas at greatest risk include Kansas City, Wichita, and Tulsa, with residents advised to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
Timing and Precautions
The Tulsa, OK NWS reports that storms in northeast Oklahoma will likely begin around 3 p.m., reaching peak intensity between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with severe conditions potentially extending until 2 a.m. Thursday. A line of storms may form later in the evening, bringing sustained severe weather across eastern Oklahoma and into neighboring states.
Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid non-essential travel, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Those in mobile homes or on major highways, such as I-44 and I-70, are urged to monitor local forecasts closely as conditions can shift quickly.
Extended Forecast
After Wednesday’s storm system, temperatures are expected to moderate, with highs in the mid-60s by Friday, bringing a quieter weather pattern for the weekend. Clearer skies are anticipated across the Midwest as conditions stabilize.
For continued updates, follow local alerts and review safety plans. Preparedness can significantly reduce risks in severe weather scenarios.
