St. Louis, Missouri – A powerful winter storm is expected to impact much of Missouri and Illinois beginning Sunday night, bringing heavy snow, dangerous cold, and periods of ice that could significantly disrupt travel, utilities, and daily routines across the region through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will spread across Missouri late Sunday before expanding into Illinois overnight, becoming heavy at times through Monday. Arctic air surging in behind the storm is expected to drive temperatures well below normal, producing hazardous wind chills and increasing the risk of frostbite during overnight hours and early morning commutes.

The most severe travel impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 70, Interstate 44, Interstate 55, and Interstate 64, where roads could quickly become snow-covered and icy. Central and northern Missouri, along with much of western and central Illinois, face the highest potential for significant snow accumulation. Southern sections of both states could see periods of sleet or freezing rain, increasing the risk of downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy snow, prepare vehicles with winter emergency supplies, and ensure homes are ready for prolonged cold. Extended subfreezing temperatures may strain heating systems and increase the risk of frozen pipes.

Winter storm warnings and cold weather advisories are expected to remain in effect through Tuesday, with additional alerts possible as the system continues to evolve across Missouri and Illinois.
