St. Louis, MO – The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois until noon Tuesday. Dangerous wind chills, dropping as low as -30°F, make outdoor exposure life-threatening without proper protection. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest conditions are expected this morning along I-70, with temperatures hovering near 3°F and wind chills hitting -30°F in some areas. The cold front will ease slightly after noon but remains severe, with wind chills staying below -15°F throughout the day.

Residents are urged to bundle up in multiple layers, wear hats and gloves, and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Schools and businesses may adjust schedules as communities face these icy conditions. Travel safely by keeping emergency kits in vehicles and checking road conditions before leaving.

The extended forecast offers some relief. Tuesday night will bring increasing clouds and lows near 8°F. On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to climb to 36°F under sunny skies, but gusty winds of up to 20 mph will maintain a chilly feel. By Thursday and Friday, the region will warm slightly, with highs near 32°F and mostly sunny skies.

While the cold snap will loosen its grip by the weekend, residents should stay cautious. Saturday’s high of 48°F could bring rain, leading to icy roads overnight. Stay informed through official updates and take extra precautions when outside.
