Springfield, MO – Extreme cold grips Missouri overnight, but a significant warm-up is on the way as the weekend approaches. Residents should take precautions as wind chills drop as low as -20°F before temperatures rise into the 60s early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon Thursday for parts of southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas. Overnight lows will hover around -8°F, with dangerous wind chills creating a risk of frostbite in as little as 30 minutes. Residents should bundle up in layers if heading outside.

By Friday, conditions improve with mostly sunny skies and highs near 29°F. A warming trend accelerates over the weekend, bringing highs of 38°F Saturday and nearing 49°F by Sunday. The region will see even warmer temperatures next week, with highs in the 60s by Monday and Tuesday.

While cold persists Thursday night into Friday morning, residents can expect relief soon. Until then, limit outdoor exposure, dress in warm layers, and check on vulnerable individuals.
