Kansas City, MO – A dramatic shift in temperatures is expected across Kansas City this weekend, with dangerously cold conditions arriving Sunday into Monday. Residents should prepare for subzero wind chills that could reach as low as -15°F, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS warns that these temperatures can pose significant risks for frostbite and hypothermia, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors. As of Thursday, milder highs near 44°F will precede a sharp drop starting Saturday evening, with Sunday’s high reaching only 15°F. Overnight lows through Tuesday could hover around -1°F, making early next week some of the coldest days this season.

Kansas City commuters should take extra precautions as high winds on Saturday and Sunday may cause slick conditions on major roads like I-70 and I-435. Winds up to 25 mph combined with freezing temperatures could impact visibility and travel safety.

Layering clothing and avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure is critical, as the NWS advises dressing for “extreme cold” with waterproof boots, gloves, and insulated outerwear. Local shelters have also ramped up operations to support those in need.

A five-day forecast shows milder highs today and Friday before the Arctic blast sets in. Highs will remain near 20°F through Wednesday.
