Jackson, Mississippi – Anyone planning to spend time outdoors across Mississippi should take precautions immediately as dangerous heat continues through this evening and into Wednesday, with heat index values expected to reach 110 to 120 degrees across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Significant (Level 3) Heat Risk remains in place for central and western Mississippi through this evening and again Wednesday. Afternoon high temperatures will climb into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees, while the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel substantially hotter. Heat stroke becomes increasingly likely with prolonged outdoor exposure under these conditions.
The highest heat risk includes communities such as Jackson, Vicksburg, Natchez, Brookhaven, Greenville and Yazoo City, where the most dangerous conditions are expected. Eastern Mississippi, including Meridian, Philadelphia and Columbus, remains under an Elevated (Level 2) Heat Risk, with heat index values generally ranging from 105 to 110 degrees.
Wednesday brings a slight reduction in heat across the Mississippi Delta, but significant heat will continue across much of central and southern Mississippi. Outdoor workers, athletes and anyone attending summer activities should schedule frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Residents are also reminded to check on older adults, relatives and neighbors who may not have adequate cooling, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
Dangerous heat is expected to continue through Wednesday, and additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if the prolonged hot pattern persists.
