Quad Cities, IA/IL – Heavy rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches near the headwaters of the Cedar River have led to rising water levels, posing significant flooding risks through the middle of next week.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, major flood stages may be reached along the Mississippi River, potentially impacting Iowa and Illinois through the Fourth of July.
Recent rains across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and northern Iowa have significantly increased water levels. Multiple chances for rain, locally and upstream, over the next week are expected to further elevate river levels through the end of June into early July. Confidence is high that the Mississippi River could reach major flood stage following this heavy rainfall. Specific areas of concern include the Rock Island gage, which could crest above major flood stage on or about the Fourth of July.
The Cedar River at Cedar Rapids is also expected to exceed moderate flood stage this week. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor river levels and forecasts through the end of the month and into early July. Precautionary measures should be taken to protect property and ensure safety during this period of increased flood risk.
