Jackson, MS – The National Weather Service has issued an extended flood warning for several areas along the Mississippi River, with moderate flooding expected to continue in parts of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. The warning affects areas in East Carroll, Chicot, Issaquena, Washington, Tensas, Madison, and Jefferson Counties.
According to the National Weather Service, the river levels are forecast to rise above flood stage starting Friday, April 11, with several locations expected to reach their crests in the coming days. In Natchez, Mississippi, the river is expected to crest at 54.5 feet by April 22, while Vicksburg’s Mississippi River level is predicted to rise to 48.5 feet by April 20.
The river’s rising levels pose risks to local infrastructure, with the Greenville boat store becoming inoperable and several roads and businesses in low-lying areas expected to flood. Additionally, at Fort Adams in Natchez, at least eight homes are likely to be inundated.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded areas and remember the safety advice: turn around, don’t drown. More information on flooding and safety precautions is available at www.water.noaa.gov.
