BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – A Mississippi man has been convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm, a class X felony, for a shooting incident that took place in September 2021.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of TJ Donlins in Bourbonnais when 23-year-old Isaac Smith of Brookhaven, Mississippi, left an 18-year-old man with serious injuries after shooting him in the face and arm.

Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe announced Wednesday a jury found Smith guilty after a seven-day trial this week.  Smith now faces up to 30 years in prison, which will be served at 85%. The sentencing will take place at a later date.

“Bourbonnais Officers and Detectives did a great job of investigating this case and gathering evidence to make an arrest and bring charges.” Rowe said Wednesday. “Law enforcement officers with the City of Kankakee and Village of Bradley, alongside experts in gunshot residue and rifling from the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, all played a crucial role in the investigation and prosecution.”

Prosecutors Dan Reedy and Samantha Sweeney were also praised for their dedication and perseverance in securing the conviction, while clerks, paralegals, and victim & witness advocates played an important role behind the scenes.

Smith was initially charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, and mob action. The victim was left in critical but stable condition in a southern Cook County hospital after the incident.

Smith’s cousin, Dajon M. Smith, 24, of Bradley, was also charged with mob action in the 2021 incident.
