Jackson, MS – The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for large portions of Mississippi and Louisiana, in effect until 6 p.m. CDT Saturday. Residents across both states are urged to remain alert as severe storms, including tornadoes, are possible throughout the day.

According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers 63 counties in Mississippi, including Hinds, Madison, Rankin, and Lauderdale, as well as 20 parishes in Louisiana, such as East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and St. Tammany. The affected areas may experience damaging winds, large hail, and tornado activity.

Meteorologists warn that conditions are favorable for tornado formation, particularly in central and eastern Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana. Thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and strong wind gusts could develop quickly, leaving little time for preparation.

Residents in the watch area should have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be ready to take shelter if warnings are issued. Mobile homes and poorly constructed buildings are especially vulnerable to high winds and should not be relied upon for protection.

The Tornado Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m., though conditions may warrant an extension or additional warnings. Officials advise the public to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
