Jackson, MS – A scorching heat wave is sweeping across Mississippi with a dangerous combination of high humidity and temperatures that could push heat index values up to 115°F by Monday. A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. this evening, with a new advisory kicking in from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, bringing the risk of heat-related illnesses to the forefront.
According to the National Weather Service, portions of southeast Arkansas, northeast Louisiana, and several areas across Mississippi will experience these extreme conditions. Cities such as Jackson, Hattiesburg, Vicksburg, and Meridian could see heat indices surpassing 110°F this afternoon, with no relief in sight until Monday evening.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned shelter, and avoiding the sun as much as possible. Light, loose-fitting clothing is recommended, along with limiting outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks in cool, shaded areas.
The heat advisory extends across areas including Rankin, Simpson, Covington, Forrest, and more. Local officials stress the importance of checking on vulnerable neighbors, particularly the elderly and young children, and ensuring they remain cool and hydrated.
If any symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke occur—such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or nausea—seek medical attention immediately. Stay vigilant, as this heat could remain dangerous throughout the weekend and into Monday evening.
