Jackson, Miss. – Heavy rainfall and the threat of flash flooding could impact millions across Mississippi today as a widespread weather system pushes through the region. Areas like Natchez and Brookhaven face a significant flood threat with up to 8 inches of rain expected by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Flood Watch remains in effect for most of central and southern Mississippi. The highest risk for severe storms—featuring damaging winds up to 60 mph and isolated tornadoes—will begin around 3 p.m. in the west and spread eastward through 11 p.m.
Flash flooding is most likely in areas south of I-20, where saturated ground and localized downpours may close roads or trigger water rescues. Key impacted areas include Vicksburg, Jackson, Hattiesburg, and Natchez. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather also exists in southwest Mississippi.
Residents are advised to avoid flood-prone roads, monitor alerts, and have emergency supplies ready. Power outages are possible with tonight’s storms, especially in rural and low-lying areas.
Warnings remain in effect through Thursday, with additional rain and isolated storms expected beyond tonight.
