Birmingham, Ala. – Thunderstorms and heavy rain are set to drench central and southern Alabama through Friday afternoon, bringing up to 4 inches of rainfall in some areas and raising concerns for localized flooding and travel disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, rain will arrive in waves beginning late Tuesday, with the highest chances—between 50% and 80%—during afternoon hours through the rest of the week. The southern half of central Alabama, including Montgomery, Troy, and Auburn, could see the heaviest downpours, especially during peak daytime heating.

From Birmingham to Selma and down to Dothan, residents should prepare for intermittent showers, lightning, and potentially slippery roads. Afternoon thunderstorms may also bring low to medium lightning risk (20–40%), particularly from Wednesday through Friday. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously during wet commutes and avoid flood-prone roads.

Rainfall totals between 2 and 4 inches are likely, especially in southern counties such as Pike, Barbour, and Bullock. While severe weather isn’t expected at this time, flash flooding remains a possibility if storms stall or overlap.
